You won’t finish a book if your writing habits drag you down.
It’s not you—it’s your habits, and 300 Pages is the program to get you writing every day.
How much have you written in the last month? Do you have an idea for a book that you really want to write, and are you kicking yourself because you’re not writing it? A typical book is about 300 pages long, but most people aren’t taught the habits needed to write that much. Many people have truly brilliant ideas for books, and most of these works forever remain just that—ideas.
Here’s what typically happens when you try to write a book (and I’ve been there myself):
- After a “honeymoon” period, you get stuck and stop writing
- Once you’re stuck, you feel frustrated and hate your work
- Then you begin to doubt yourself and feel like a fraud
Yet once you develop a writing habit:
- Getting stuck doesn’t stop you
- Frustration doesn’t stop you
- Doubt doesn’t stop you
You may occasionally still feel those things, but you keep writing and get it done.
To get to a 300 page work, you need to learn how to write every day. A daily writing habit makes it easier to write and develops your skills faster than anything else. I’d like to teach you how to get there.
Joe tutored me when I was studying for my degree. He’s the reason I was able to sit down and write eight papers–and the lowest grade I got was a 97. — Katie D., graduate student
Before I learned to write every day, I felt stuck, doubtful, and disappointed. I felt like an amateur. I procrastinated on my book, made tons of excuses why I couldn’t write—like, “I don’t have enough time”—and I honeymooned: starting new projects, stopping when they got hard, and starting over when I felt like it.
The change for me came in 2012 while I was traveling full-time for work and living in hotels. I started writing a novel, so at first I felt hopeful and excited, but then I restarted the old loop of despair and frustration. However, this time I happened to be tracking my daily word count through the National Novel Writing Month (NANOWRIMO) website. Obsessively I updated my word count every day to reach my goal.
Such was the start of my writing habit, and after I finished that first novel (which I shoved into a drawer and forgot about) I kept writing. I used an app called Twords to track my word count and create daily miniature goals. Since then I have written 500,000 words. Now my biggest problem is cutting words out of my writing. I know I can write a book. I know I can deal with the ups and downs that come with the process. I feel like an author. I have 15 works on Amazon, plus a manuscript that’s under review by one agent and under request by three others. I’m proud to have such a volume of work, and I believe I’ve improved my skills as a result of my habit. And I’m still writing. Now I want to teach you how to do the same.
Joe encourages me to write every day and is able to find the gold in the gravel I churn out on the days I don’t feel like writing at all. He taught me that good scheduling habits can lead to, and are necessary for, good writing, even if you’re not “feeling it” that day. He is also able to inspire me as writer and make me feel proud of my work. — Jim G., fiction writer
I’M OFFERING A 5-MONTH “300 PAGES” PROGRAM TO TEACH YOU GOOD WRITING HABITS.
WHAT THE 5 MONTHS ARE LIKE:
- Coaching and Accountability: We’ll meet as a group every Monday evening for 2 hours in Alexandria, VA, or we can meet for 2 hours virtually by Skype on Tuesday evening. When we meet we’ll review your progress and discuss personalized strategies to improve your writing. I’ll help you understand what you can try next. Think of it as therapy for writing.
- Mini Goals and Tracking: Every week you’ll be challenged to write a different number of words, tracked through an app called Twords.
- Guaranteed Results: The program costs $360/mo for 5 months. I guarantee that I can get you to 300 pages in that time, but if I don’t—that is, if you are unable to write the number of words I challenge you with in a given week for 3 weeks—we’ll stop the program and you’ll get a full refund of your money.
FAQ
“Don’t I need to know exactly what I want to write about before I start?” It’s easy to use this as an excuse to never start writing. You need to plan, but it’s completely separate from the habit. You need to start developing good habits today.
“I’m very busy. This is for people with lots of free time, right?” I began the habit when I was at the busiest time of my life—traveling and working. Constraints of time are actually the very thing that will help you build the habit.
Let’s get started on your 300 pages. I’ll teach you how to develop a writing habit, and you’ll write more, write more easily, and write better.
Start writing your 300 pages. The first session starts June 1, 2016. Anyone registering before May 15, 2016 will get 50% off their first month.
